LAS VEGAS –
Hundreds of porn fans, many of them females, spilled onto the red carpet at the Palms Casino and Resort Hotel to ogle and photograph their favorite stars from the pornography industry.
But it was the introduction of Roxxxy, a “sex robot,” that stole the attention during her unveiling at the annual AVN Awards and Adult Entertainment Expo.
Roxxxy is so sophisticated that “she” can carry on a discussion, express her love to you and be “your loving friend,” says Douglas Hines, Roxxxy’s creator. “She can talk to you, listen to you and feel your touch.”
The robot is a life-sized doll that is equipped with artificial intelligence and even has human-like synthetic skin.
It’s appropriate and ironic that the Consumer Electronics Show and the AVN Awards are held the same week in Vegas. Hines is an electrical engineer and computer scientist who spent about $1 million and 2 ½ years creating an interactive woman using 18 artists and engineers from three countries. Roxxxy retails from $7,000 to$9,000 dollars.
Hines, a former employee at AT&T Bell Laboratories, says prospective customers can customize their robot according to their personal preferences. They can order Roxxxy’s hair color, eye color and other features. Customers can also select from a menu of personalities.
