Wiz Khalifa may already be one of the biggest hip-hop artist to come out of Pittsburgh and he has his eyes set on putting his city on the map. Khalifa’s rhythmic and versatile flow is unique and one that listeners have grown to appreciate. Fans can expect to see more from the lyricist as he prepares for his upcoming “Deal or No Deal” tour, and through the launch of his Taylor Gang clothing line.
How would you describe your music?
My music is really just fun, motivational, and just really encouraging people to have fun, be yourself and, and be the best.
When are you going to release Cabin Fever?
Cabin Fever is gonna be the second mixtape that I drop this year ,I’m gonna drop “Kush and Orange Juice” first.
Would you ever alter your content in order to become more mainstream?
I definitely wouldn’t alter my content. If i’m focusing on mainstream success then that’s what I’m aiming for or whatever project I’m working on then, I’ll probably gear it towards that but I wouldn’t compromise anything.
What are your plans for touring more in the south?
The more support the better, I’ve been getting a lot shows in Florida college towns, around Atlanta, and New Orleans. So it’s getting out there more but I think my sound is more of a northern, mid-western sound, so I think it’s just taking them [southerns] a little longer to catch on.
Atlanta native Saycon Sengbloh is cast in her most influential role to date in FELA!, the Broadway musical that uses Afrobeat music to tell the life story of Nigerian instrumentalist and political activist Fela Anikulapo-Kuti.
How did you get the role of Sandra Isadore in FELA!?
One of my good friends was already in the show when it was off-Broadway last year and at that time I was doing another show, HAIR. I heard about them doing this musical and I was thrilled to have the opportunity to be a part of such an extraordinary play.
What role does Sandra Isadore play in Fela Kuti’s life?
She’s a woman who has influenced his life a great deal. She was a very inspirational and powerful, black woman who was into the black power movement. [Singer Sandra Isadore is the only lady to ever sing lead vocals on a Fela Kuti song].
How did you prepare for this role?
I did a lot of research and just learned about the Black Panther movement, studied Pan-Africanism, listened to a lot of different music with soul singers and just watched movies such as Malcolm X.
What has it been like working with director and choreographer Bill T. Jones?
Working with Bill T. Jones is extremely challenging; he is an extreme artist. He’s very creative. He knows what he wants, and if he doesn’t, he can’t rest until he figures out what he wants. I admire his wit and intelligence.
