Chef Bren Herrera Shines in ‘American Idol’ Spotlight

Bren Herrera

General Larry Platt and his “Pants On the Ground” anthem wasn’t the only story that caught our attention during “American Idol’s” recent auditions. During the Jan. 12 season premiere, noted chef and travel writer Bren Herrera found herself at the center of attention, where she was able to bask in the adoring rays of “AI’s” 30 million viewers.

Having entered a contest for I Can’t Believe It’s Not Butter only months before, Herrera was shocked to learn that her self-produced commercial had captured the attention of the brand’s executives, and in the process earned her airtime during the show.

So now that the world had seen Herrera’s commercial, what was her next step? For starters, her main goal was to spread the message of her brand, and, of course, bring home the contest’s grand prize. Moments after the commercial aired, rolling out spoke with the stunning chef to gain more insight on her big commercial moment. –dewayne rogers

What were your immediate thoughts after seeing your commercial?
Very emotional, but extremely proud … I had no idea the commercial was going to win. I’m just thankful for the opportunity to have 30 million viewers see a bit of my daily hustle!

What initially drew you to the culinary world?

My love for entertaining, and always being in the kitchen with my mother is what drew me to this world.

How do you work at perfecting your craft?

A lot of reading, a lot of practice, some mentoring by respected chefs and a lot of calls to my mother.

Do you have any advice for active adults who may not have time to prepare meals that take a long time?
Invest in a pressure cooker! It cuts down cooking time by 75 percent and preserves all the natural nutrition and vitamins in food that would otherwise escape in conventional cooking. And … be simple with your recipes. Everything doesn’t have to be gourmet or complicated to be good.
