Vanessa Williams and crew will be packing up boxes after this viewing season of once critically acclaimed “Ugly Betty” comes to a close. ABC has pulled the plug on the multicultural dramedy.
The show premiered in fall 2006 (saluted by Emmys and Golden Globes), but since then has gradually struggled with audience erosion.
The telenovela-style, “Betty” stars America Ferrera as an ambitious but style-challenged young woman out to build a future at a New York fashion magazine who interacts with the somewhat shared, snarky and vindictive nemesis, Vanessa Williams.
It’s with sadness that we bid adieu to a show with such diverse casting. It made great strides in the portrayal of race and sexual orientation that was often heralded by the media.
ABC says the series will conclude its run in a fashion that will satisfy its fans. There are eight episodes left.
