In the wake of the devastating tragedy in Haiti, and in honor of the late Michael Jackson, approximately 100 current musicians signed up to re-record the “We are the World” mega-single following the Grammy Awards, announced legend Smokey Robinson.
The King of Pop, who was honored with a moving tribute and a posthumous Lifetime Achievement Award, co-wrote “We are the World” with Lionel Ritchie 25 years ago. The historic song was produced by Quincy Jones, performed by 40 stars of the era and went on to set industry records as well as raise millions for famine relief in Africa.
This time, scores of musicians answered the call to lend their talents to help in the recovery efforts in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, following the worst natural disaster in that country’s recorded history. The artists will record the song overnight at the Nokia Theater inside the Staples Center. Among those committed are Usher, Miley Cyrus and Ricky Martin.
“It’s a wonderful idea, not only because it is needed, but as a tribute to Michael Jackson,” Robinson said, who will also participate in the “We are the World” reincarnation. “The song will hold up forever.”
Robinson explained that only since the pop legend’s death, has the world come to understand the true scope of Jackson’s humanitarian efforts, particularly with the “Earth Song” that was going to be a major part of the “This Is It” tour. “This song has to do with Michael’s love of ecology. We only have one planet. We all have to live here. We all have to make the most of it.”
As for MJ, Robinson continued to praise his talent and his efforts to make the world a better place. “Michael is an only. There will be only one Michael Jackson,” he said solemnly. “There will never be another Michael Jackson. I am a music connoisseur. I grew up in a musical family and have been around music and musicians all my life. He is the most complete musician I have ever seen. Michael was my little brother and his death was a shock.” –terry shropshire
