For 19 years, Joyce Littel was an essential component of the success of Atlanta’s V-103 radio station. As the voice for the late-night “Quiet Storm,” Littel played romantic tunes and offered vital relationship advice to her listeners. But shortly after the New Year, V-103, which is owned by CBS, terminated her contract. Littel recently discussed her new business ventures and provided advice on relationships. –amir shaw

How did you get started with V-103?

Mike Roberts hired me in 1990. He called me up and offered me a part-time job after hearing me on WIGO/AM. I took the offer because it was more money than what I was making! I only worked part-time for about 3–4 months, and because I had the voice and personality, Mike decided to put me on the ‘Quiet Storm.’ He felt that I would be a welcomed change to the nighttime sound — a sound that is generally dominated by men. The rest is history.

What are some of your most memorable moments at the station?

I’ve been at V-103 for a little over 19 years. In that time, I’d have to say that some of my most memorable moments were the interviews and opportunities to connect with artists, authors and other celebrities. But I’d have to say that the most important memorable moment was the start of ‘Love & Relationships.’ I have a true heart for love, which is naturally the basis of all I do, and just to witness the impact of the topics and the discussions, and how they helped to enhance and save relationships gave a whole new definition to success for me.

Was it a surprise that they parted ways with you after so many years?

Yes. Of course! I just didn’t see it coming! When you’re good at what you do and you’re on top of your game, you don’t think about the unexpected. This release was clearly a surprise, but life goes on. I think what has made the transition easier for me is being able to rest in the fact that I had prepared myself for this day. Even though it wasn’t in my plan, I had laid a foundation for my future beyond V-103 nine years ago when I created Littel Concepts.

Why is it important for people who have jobs to also have their own brands?

Let’s face it, this economy is terrible and a lot of us are struggling just to get by and still can’t make ends meet. Honestly, a full-time job can’t cut it these days. So, we have to start looking to our own personal skills to develop a brand. Luckily for me, I planned ahead. I didn’t see this day coming, but I developed something just in case it ever did because nothing lasts forever.

What are some tips for dating on a budget on Valentine’s Day?

I think it’s important to realize that you can’t measure love or genuine emotional appreciation by material things. There are many things that you could spend money on, but at the end of the day, a true special moment is priceless. If I were to give tips for dating on a budget, I’d say (1) Keep it simple and remember that money can’t buy you love. (2) Don’t go to a crowded restaurant, cook something at home because it makes the moment last longer. (3) Just remember to think out of the box and be creative. Most times, significant others want to see that you put more thought into their gift than the actual amount of money it took for you to get it. Remember, everything doesn’t have to carry a monetary value, besides, it carries a lot more weight when it comes straight from the heart.

What are some of the events that you are working on?

Coming up this Valentine’s Day weekend, on Saturday, Feb. 13 and Sunday Feb. 14, I will be holding my signature event, ‘Passion Poetry: Sweet Seduction’ at Center Stage Atlanta. It will be two shows on Saturday (8 p.m. and midnight), and one show on Sunday at 7 p.m. featuring everyone from the Cosby Show’s Malcolm Jamal Warner to Avery Sunshine, L.A.’s C.O.C.O. Brown and famed jazz trumpeter Joey Summerville; it’s sure to be the perfect backdrop for singles and couples to experience romance, passion and a moment that will never be forgotten. Also, my very first official CD project, Passion & Poetry: A Musical Masterpiece, will be released in early spring and will feature all of the acts who perform at this year’s event.

In April, I’ll be kicking off the Home Girl Concert Series in my hometown of Athens, Ga. It will be a mixture of different events including comedy, gospel, old school and funk concerts and a jazz and blues festival.

In the summer, I’ve got ATL’S Baddest Chicks, which is a national platform to recognize some of Atlanta’s greatest local female talent. Also, because Atlanta still loves the poetry, you’ll see the return of Poetic Moments Live! and a LIVE version of my former Love & Relationships show  now called Relationship Conversations. For the kids I’ll have the GOT WORD?: Youth Poetry Slam and a new event for the college poetry circuit. Finally, my Sista for Sistas Foundation will kick off, and of course the return of A Holiday Affair in December.
