Tyler Perry Steps Up to Address Hunger in America

Paula Greear is the Director of Media Relations for Feeding America and spokes person for  Feeding America,  which is the leading domestic hunger relief charitable organization in the United States.  They have a  newtwork of  over 200 food banks across the country.
The sole mission  of this organization is to ensure that nutritious food goes to people who are in need people and don’t have access to food.  Hunger is a huge issue in the United States and far to often it is a silent crisis.  The Hunger in America 2010 study showed that more than 37 million Americans are receiving emergency food assistance from the Feeding America network.  One thing is for sure fighting hunger is a solvable crisis but it takes collaboration, conversation and shining a light on this tragic issue, for that to happen.
How has having a sponsor like Tyler Perry impacted the organization?
Tyler Perry is a very active member of the entertainment council, which helps bring to the surface what the issue is and what people can do to get involved.
How are you going to work with the Obama administration to combat this social issue?
We have been very fortunate in working with the Federal government, it is a huge part of the equation and we look forward to continuing to work with the President’s administration.
How are you getting the word out to the people about the program?
We work through our network of food banks across the country.  This study is certainly shining a light on the magnitude of the issue.  It is the most comprehensive survey study to ever look at hunger in America, and it was conducted at the height of the economic recession.
Are you working with the black churches?
We are working with faith based organizations across the country.  We firmly believe that it takes everyone public, private,  and partnerships to address this.
What efforts are Hunger America putting into place to help as many people in 2010 as possible?
We work through our food banks and we are working aggressively to spread the word about the SNAP program, which is our supplemental nutrition program that use to be called food stamps.

The Hunger in America 2010 study

Acclaimed filmmaker and playwright Tyler Perry, who has personally experienced hunger and homelessness, shared in a press release that “It’s almost impossible to imagine that this situation could exist in ours, the most wealthy and generous of nations. Please look out for your neighbors who you think might need help. No one should go hungry in America.”
