During the annual Kickoff to Rebuild celebration in the impoverished town of Coconut Grove, Fla.,, Harvey spoke with Alexis and Marcia Carter (12 and 14 respectively), after the sisters asked for a picture. But instead of posing with the girls for a picture, Harvey asked the girls about their hopes and dreams. Soon after, Harvey spoke with Alexis and Marcia’s mother and told her that he would pay both of the girls’ entire tuition when they are accepted into college. Harvey spoke with rolling out moments after making a promise that should give Alexis and Marcia an opportunity to achieve success. –amir shaw
“I saw these two girls and they wanted a picture. I do mentoring for boys, but girls need guidance, too. A lot of girls who don’t have fathers in their [lives] have trouble understanding what real manhood is. Some girl get tricked by boys who have nothing to offer them.
“I just want to see these kids achieve. When God tells you to do something, you have to do it. My sons are going to Morehouse this fall and if I can help somebody else get there, I will.
“These girls can come back after college and help rebuild the community. It’s not that big of a deal. I can start saving for their education by cutting back on a few suits,” Harvey said.
