How does it feel to be compared to Alex Haley?

It’s really interesting. I’m blessed to have the opportunity to share … what I have to say with other young adults like myself.

  • How do you manage to balance school and writing?

I found when I came up here [to Harvard], that a lot of the other students are balancing amazing things with being in school as well. I’ve been doing it all my life, so I’m kind of used to it now.

Where did the idea and inspiration for your book come from?

When I was younger, I had a passion for writing short stories and poetry. Around that age I also loved researching and reading about my own ancestors, so I merged all of these passions together.

How do you plan to use your standing as an author to encourage young people?

I speak at different schools and I try to drive home the point that none of the things I have achieved are impossible. It takes hard work with no excuses, but if you have a dream, then that dream can come true.
