Multiplatinum hip-hop star Lil Wayne’s sentencing has been delayed until March 2 so that he can undergo oral surgery, his attorney announced in a Manhattan courtroom.
The rapper born Dwayne Michael Carter Jr., 28, needs to finish a series of surgeries to correct a dental problem before he serves his sentence. Weezy pled guilty in October 2009 of illegally possessing a firearm on his tour bus. He was stopped by police in 2007 shortly after a concert in New York, the city and state that boasts one of the toughest gun laws in the nation. Pundits speculate that Wayne will receive a year in a city jail and serve approximately eight months with good behavior.
After gaining considerable fame in the earlier part of the previous decade, Wayne’s popularity skyrocketed with three consecutive eponymous albums, Tha Carter (2004), That Carter II (2005), and Tha Carter III (2008). The latter album catapulted the rapper into rarified air, earning eight Grammy nominations and spawning two No. 1 singles on the Billboard Hot 100, “Lollipop” and “Down.” He is the authority behind Young Money, a division of Cash Money that boasts such up-and-coming high-profile acts as Drake and Nicki Minaj. –terry shropshire
