black coupleBeing involved in a loving relationship is not always about receiving lavish gifts, having fancy dinners or taking expensive vacations. Ideally, a heart tie to another human being should be about feeling loved, honored and special — or at least that’s what a romantic relationship should be about.

Too often, however, couples don’t take the time to do the little things that can help them stay connected and committed.

Valentine’s Day is a time to express and celebrate love, but as the holiday draws near, some may be stumped about how to celebrate with their significant other. This year, with the country still in the throes of a recession, it’s a perfect opportunity to take a creative approach and save some money, too. All it takes is a warm heart and a little effort; remember, it’s the simple things that really should matter most. –christian johnson

1. Couple Time – Set aside a day where all media and electronics are banned, meaning no Play Station 3, TV, or computers; yes, couples will have to disconnect from cyberspace. The two of you can play card games, board games, or get lost in conversation; you never know what new things you might learn about each other.

2. Make a Collage – Create a collage with pictures or items that have special meaning. It could be a favorite picture of the two of you, or a ticket stub from a concert.  Make the trip down memory lane fun and exciting.

3. Dance – Surprise him or her with a playlist of favorite songs, and together you all can dance the night away, right in the comfort of your home. You can slow dance or just get downright silly, either way it’s a great way to put some fun back into your relationship.

4. Play Chef – You and your mate can flip through a cookbook or look online for a meal that you guys can prepare together. To put a spin on things, find a recipe neither of you has prepared before.

5. Take a Romantic Stroll – Find a safe park with a scenic trail and hit the track with your loved one. As you stroll hand in hand, who knows, you may just fall in love all over again.
