The Third Annual Disney Dreamers Academy with Steve Harvey kicked off on Feb. 11 at Disney World in Orlando, Fla. The four- day adventure was a memorable way for 100 African American students to celebrate their achievements, and a great way to start Black History Month.
“Never let what’s on the outside define what’s on the inside” was the inspirational messages echoed from motivational speaker Jonathan Sprinkles, and this would be the message the students — also known as Dreamers — would hear throughout the trip. Onsite professionals: Dexter Tanksley, a Walt Disney Imagineer; Disney Animator Marlon West, and Chef Jeff Henderson held seminars that provided Dreamers a first hand look into their job task.
Disney Dreamers were able to enjoy performances from a variety or artists including Yolanda Adams, Cupid, Kimberly Locke and Nuttin Butt Strings, along with the FAMU Strikers and other Disney performers.
The event closed with moving message from the Queen of Hip-Hop Soul, Mary J. Blige, who was the keynote speaker. Blige shared personal stories with the dreamers telling tales of the high and low points of her life. She made sure Dreamers understood the importance of self-confidence and self-worth.
Steve Harvey who was ill at the beginning of the event, spoke to the Dreamers and expressed how proud he was that they took advantage of every opportunity that was presented to them. Disney Dreamers got to take home an array of gifts, and most importantly knowledge that if used correctly will take them to the next level. –christian johnson
