Tomeka, protégé to Sir Mix-A-Lot, is clearly a girl that likes to challenge the norm. Blending R&B with Seattle grunge and pop, she and Sir Mix-A-Lot have crafted an album filled with alternative concepts and sounds. Lyrically, Tomeka is headed in the right direction, challenging her listeners with her thoughtful, nuanced words as well as wooing them with her crisp vocals. Sonically though, it sounds unpolished and incomplete. It’s missing rich textures of sound and depth, leaving the album feeling skeletal at times. Tomeka’s got the spirit, but until she matches that with taste and experience she’ll only be notable, never exceptional. –nicholas robinson
