At the Black College Expo last weekend at the Cobb Galleria Center in suburban Atlanta, young women were encouraged to take care of their physical, financial and professional well-being.
Brandi and Karli Harvey, the beautiful twin daughters of actor, comedian and talk show host Steve Harvey, participated in the expo to uplift young women through their new program, Young, Fit and Fly.
Brandi, who is a former educator and current assistant director of the Steve Harvey Foundation teamed up with her sister, Karli, a top hair stylist in metro Atlanta and style director for Young, Fit and Fly, to offer a program to help keep sisters grounded and positive.
“This is a movement and an empowerment series that started at Clark Atlanta University and Spelman College,” Brandi says.
Young, Fit, and Fly is an idea that Brandi came up with last September after speaking at a Delta Sigma Theta Sorority event and leadership series, where she was bombarded with questions on how to better oneself. Fitness is also a priority for the Harvey sisters with the series, due to the many young women they encountered on college campuses that were dealing with health and obesity issues.
As a part of the Black College Expo’s College Resource Center, Young, Fit and Fly was a huge presence at the convention with their interactive seminar. “I believe myself to be quite an effective person,” Brandi says. “Young, Fit and Fly was the solution to problems that black women face today. Black women can work together. Collectively, we’re here to help, we’re here to serve.”
“We feel good about giving back because it’s important for us,” Karli says. “We’re not perfect, but we hold each other accountable.” –tianna faulkner
