HBCU Tour Recruits Inner City Youth for College

alvin hartley

Alvin Hartley is the president of HBCUBusTours.com. The company, which was founded by his mother, builds connections between inner-city high school students and historically black colleges by exposing them to campus life through visits and meetings with college counselors and faculty.

“The bus tour not only encourages students to attend an HBCU, but it also provides information on preparation and financial assistance,” explains Hartley.

On March 9, 2010, Hartley, who attended Norfolk State University, was honored by Atlanta City Council president Caesar Mitchell. Mitchell presented him with a proclamation in honor of his service to the community.

For over 29 years HBCUbustours.com has been providing education and information to inner-city students and their parents. Attending college for some students may be just a dream but the tour gives them the opportunity to realize that higher education can be a reality for them.

“It’s not just about giving our young adults degrees. It’s about taking the best of the best, so they can compete and have a good and fufilling lifestyle once they graduate.  So it is worth the investment to get young adults on the tour and actually get them in college,” says Hartley. –christian johnson
