Daniel “Diggy” Simmons, the son of Joseph “Reverend Run” and the nephew of hip-hop impresario Russell, is stepping out of his famous relatives’ shadow with the release of his first mixtape, aptly titled, The First Flight.
Young Diggy, who is best known for his family’s hit reality show on MTV, “Run’s House,” proudly shares that he worked on the mixtape solo. “People think I want this handed to me from my family, but my dad and uncle didn’t even know about my mixtape when I was in the process of making it or getting it done,” says the 15-year-old rap neophyte.
The young hip-hop heir adds that he did all of the writing on The First Flight and he hopes people will not prejudge his work before giving it a listen. His music addresses everything from girls to the challenges he faces as a teenager.
Diggy says interest in his mixtape may vary according to the audience, but he believes his work will speak for itself. “People are attracted to [the mixtape] for … two reasons: One reason [is] because they heard the two previous tracks from the tape I leaked before it dropped,” he explains. “And many people … were [just curious, like] ‘Oh, man, I gotta hear this kid.’ … And from there, many people were shocked with what they heard and that I [wrote] all of it etc. And I’m thankful for the feedback and how many people I made believe in the music,” he says.
