With shows like “Kell on Earth” and “SPINdustry” on Bravo and E! Networks documenting the professional lives of prominent entertainment publicists, interest in the public relations industry has grown rapidly. Trameika Vaxter did more than just express an interest in the industry — she launched her own public relations firm in Frisco, Texas.
Perfect Plan PR provides marketing and public relations services to lifestyle brands for women and nonprofit organizations. Vaxter, a Long Beach, Calif., native, developed an interest in public relations while studying at The University of California-Fullerton. She interned at Hill & Knowlton Inc., a global public relations firm in Los Angeles, and has worked in the field for the past six years.
The wife and mother of two says that there are many faulty perceptions about the public relations industry. “One of the biggest misconceptions is that we are liars and that all we do is host parties and events,” explains Vaxter.
“For anyone interested in going into the PR industry, the best advice that I could give them is to hone in on your writing skills, be flexible, and know your media and their target audience,” Vaxter says. She also admitted that some of her biggest challenges have been trying to incorporate social media (i.e Twitter, Facebook, MySpace, etc.) into traditional PR strategies. “Social media has assimilated into PR strategies across the board. It is a phenomenon that can’t be avoided.”
