The scene was reminiscent of a Klan rally that could have taken place during the 1960s. One day before the House was scheduled to vote on President Barack Obama’s historic health care bill, protestors who oppose the bill gathered in front of the U.S. Capitol to vehemently express their displeasure.
However, their unruly behavior suggested that their anger was caused by more than the potential outcome of the health care bill passing. The protestor’s rage was fueled by racism.
Rep. John Lewis, D-Georgia, and Rep. Emanuel Cleaver, D-Missouri, were called the ‘N-Word’ by protestors several times as they walked out of the health care meeting at the Capitol. The protestors also yelled “kill the bill” and screamed anti-gay slurs at Rep. Barney Frank, D-Massachusetts, who is openly gay.
With each protest, followers of the Republican and Tea parties are using political rallies as forums to spew hate. If Republican and Tea party leaders continue to ignore these divisive acts by their followers, the racism that they display will eventually lead to a regrettable disaster. -amir shaw
