Police Arrest Boy in WalMart ‘Blacks Leave’ Incident

Police Arrest Boy in WalMart 'Blacks Leave' IncidentThe culprit behind the Walmart “blacks leave the store” incident has been nabbed. New Jersey police arrested a 16-year-old boy in the case.

The boy allegedly picked up one of the store’s PA phones and said, “Attention, Walmart shoppers: Will all the black people please leave the store. Thank you.” It was a prank that caused black shoppers to cry foul and Walmart to scramble to find out how it happened.

Police say they scoured Facebook and other online postings for comments about the incident and found instances of “kids bragging,” notes The New York Times. They also had store images of the youth and two others near the phone in question before the announcement and rushing from the store afterward. Anonymous tips helped seal the arrest.

He faces up to a year in a juvenile detention center if convicted on charges of harassment and bias.

Though an offensive act, a year in juvy could be a bit much.  In an effort to demonstrate racial sensitivity, officials may be going a little overboard. –gerald radford
