When was your aha moment, when you realized that gospel music was what you wanted to do with your life?
My aha moment would’ve been when I saw John P. Kee. I saw him in concert in Columbus, Ga., [and] then in Macon, Ga., and he literally just poured into me offstage and I was like, ‘Man this is what I want to do.’ I think I was 12 years old and he gave me the mic at his concert and had me sing with him.
You’ve been pronounced dead twice. Talk about that.
I was actually stillborn and my parents immediately began praying on my behalf. That was a miracle all on its own that my life was restored then. The big testimony is the second time that I died. When I was 4 years old, I fell four floors in Germany and there was a hospital located across the street, so two doctors were coming out and they saw what happened. They tried to revive me and they literally pronounced me dead on the spot. My mother finally gets out there and she just started praying out to God and crying and calling the name of Jesus. Two times she called Jesus and on the third time she screamed out, ‘The blood of Jesus,’ and God gave me back my life.
What message do you want to impart to your listeners with this album?
I believe that when God allows us to go through things, it’s not to destroy us, it’s not to beat us down — it’s simply to stretch us past the place of complacency and comfort to a place that requires our faith.
