Lady-killer, Michael Jai White, 42, and outspoken actress, Tasha Smith, are arguably the most entertaining couple profiled in Tyler Perry’s Why Did I Get Married franchise. Largely due to Smith’s (Angela) over-the-top antics and White’s (Marcus) response to them, the pair kept Why Did I Get Married viewers in stitches … and it’s no different in the sequel.
In both movies, the two go back and forth over Angela’s suspicions that Marcus is cheating on her, which leads to a series of gut-busting exchanges between the two. But, the heated exchanges end up leading to steamy passion that makes it all better.
I had the privilege of being invited to the Bahamian premiere of the … Married sequel, … Married Too and while there, I caught up with White and asked him about his on-screen relationship with the hilarious actress.
You and Tasha are the most popular couple in the Married movie franchise — how do you explain the chemistry between you two?
[Chuckles] It’s because we used to be an item. We used to be together, so we know each other inside out, and I love her and love working with her [eyes swiftly shifting from left to right a few times].
Wow … that’s a well-kept secret; who knew?
It was years ago, but she’s a great lady … and so is my wife [the cleanup]. I’ve watched my wife pull herself up by her bootstraps and become a doctor. She’s an amazing woman, she’s here with me now.
That’s really great. I’m sure you’re very proud of her (side-eying him a little).
So, ladies, in case you didn’t know it and to answer the question posed in the movie, your “first black” superhero is happily married and has been since 2005 to an OB/GYN named Courtenay Chatman. The couple has a daughter named Morgan Michelle and he has two sons from a previous relationship … and, no, they’re not Tasha’s. –gerald radford
