If you live in Alabama, you really need to watch what you wear to prom! Recently, over a dozen students at Oxford High School were disciplined for dress code violations and offered a choice: corporal punishment in the form of paddling or a three-day suspension.
The dress code prohibits, among other things, transparent materials and revealing necklines.
“Our community has certain expectations of what is appropriate,” the principal said, defending the rule.
While reports differ on how many students were disciplined (the Anniston Star puts the number at 25), apparently, all but one of the offenders chose paddling.
“We’re too old to be paddled,” said the lone holdout, Erica DeRamus. “This is not the 1940s.”
As could be expected, the girl’s mother is incensed.
“They said her dress length was short,” she fumes, “but that’s the way they are making them now.”
