Anti-Obama Billboards in Atlanta: Fair Politics or Hate?

anti-obama billboardAtlantans are being bombarded with huge billboards around the city that are taking aim at President Obama.

Arranged through a Web site called BillboardsAgainstObama.com, the advertisements send messages such as “Stop Obama’s Socialism”; “If you are not outraged, you are not paying attention”; “Stop the Lies”; and “Now It’s Personal! America’s Coming For You Congress! Vote Liberals Out in 2010!”

There are at least nine billboards, which rent for between $2,500 and $3,500 monthly, positioned in prominent areas around the city.

In an interview with Neil Cavuto on Fox News, group spokesman Tommy Newberry — who hasn’t responded to black media outlets — said they are trying to raise enough money to take the billboards nationwide. He told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution the “billboards are a great way to use the free market to stop socialism.” Donors already have contributed from $1 to $3,200.

By the middle of this week, some of the billboards should start appearing in California, Newberry also told the newspaper.

I may have missed it, but I don’t recall such displays being erected against President George W. Bush when the nation was largely disappointed with the job he was doing. It’s hard not to consider going that “extra mile” as more racism and hate than political fair play. Are the unusual tactics of the responsible group over the top and racist or am I off base? Sound off. –gerald radford
