Jill Scott Countersuing Her Longtime Record Company, Hidden Beach Records

Neo soul princess Jill Scott is having a great year. She stars in the blockbusting Tyler Perry vehicle Why Did I Get Married Too. And she is headlining the popular music tour with fellow crooner Maxwell.

There’s just this little thing of being sued by her longtime record company, Hidden Beach Records. And after a few months of taking their legal punches, claiming breach of contract, the vivacious vocalist is coming out swinging hard. She is countersuing Hidden Beach claiming that the record company cost her millions of dollars in earnings over the years.

The Philly-bred beauty also claims mismanagement by the label and that they, in turn, broke previously established contractural obligations to her. Scott’s attorneys demand Hidden Beach stop “misusing her name on Internet Web sites,” BV Buzz reports. In addition, Scott’s attorneys released the following statement, casting doubt on the authenticity of Hidden Beach’s claims against Scott:

“The lawsuit filed on February 3, 2010, by Hidden Beach Recordings against Jill Scott has no legal merit and misrepresents the history of Ms. Scott’s relationship with the label. Jill Scott has the legal right to terminate her recording contract with Hidden Beach Recordings under California’s 7-year rule, where she had been a recording artist for more than 10 years. During her time at Hidden Beach Recordings, she released several highly successful albums. At this time, with many creative projects in the works which include music, film and television roles and product development, Ms. Scott looks forward to continuing to further her artistry and building the Jill Scott brand in other creative environments.” –terry shropshire
