Spelman College has been given money to increase the number of black engineers matriculating from the school, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. The move addresses the dearth of both blacks and women in the field typically dominated by white males. The grant was announced on Friday.
ExxonMobil presented the all-women HBCU with $1 million to go toward scholarships for those interested in technology-related programs. The funds will be set aside for six students, designated as ExxonMobil Scholars, each year majoring in targeted science or math areas. The selected students will receive mentoring, internships, research training and access to labs at Spelman and Georgia Tech.
Spelman is already ranked as one of the leading producers of black females who go on to earn doctoral degrees in science and engineering. –gerald radford
