Black Math Genius, MIT Graduate Offers SAT, GRE, GMAT Scholarships to Students

Why do you think you are drawn to mathematics and so successful and proficient in the subject that is statistically unusual for a female?

My interest and passion for math began at an early age. In fact, many say it’s in my DNA. With engineers as parents, there was always a focus on math in our household. I remember playing a math addition and subtraction video game on a Texas Instrument console around the age of 6. We grew up with multiple computers in the house . My dad taught us BASIC programming language, and it was a big deal when Windows 3.1 came out. My father is an electrical engineer educated at Georgia Tech and Stanford, and my mother is an environmental engineer educated at UCLA and Georgia Tech. I have an aunt with an electrical engineering Ph.D. from MIT and an uncle who was one of the first black men to graduate from Georgia Tech. My older sister, Jennifer, earned an electrical engineering degree from Georgia Tech; and my younger brother, Matthew, has two applied math degrees from Harvard. With a family that has such a strong interest in math, it is perhaps less surprising that I was drawn to math and science and more surprising that my youngest sister, Leslie, has a degree in journalism instead of a math-related degree.
Why is it important for MathSP to provide full tuition scholarships to SAT, GRE and GMAT students?
I started MathSP primarily for two reasons. I am a huge proponent of collegiate education on the undergraduate level as well as the graduate level. I believe that education unlocks many doors. I focus on math as a means to achieve higher education because I love math, I love seeing others excel in math subjects, and I love it when I help students increase their score on the quantitative section of standardized tests. The spark in their eyes once they finally understand a concept and realize that math doesn’t have to be hard makes me extremely proud.

Our prices are competitive because we are the best at what we do. However, we realize that some students have the internal drive but cannot afford our classes or our tutoring services. We provide scholarships because those students facing financial hardship deserve assistance just as much those who are able to pay for our courses. Every student can conquer math, and our scholarships provide an opportunity for any student to have that spark in their eyes.

Espy earned her bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), her master’s degree in chemical engineering at the University of California-Berkeley and an MBA at Emory University.
