Guerdwich Montimere could not let go of his high school hoop dreams. Montimere, 22, decided to pose a 16-year-old high school student named Jerry Joseph in order to play basketball at Permian High School in Odessa, Texas.
Montimere told the school’s basketball coach, Danny Wright, that he was homeless and was able to make the team as a 6-foot-5 forward. He led the team to the state playoffs and was given the Newcomer of the Year award.
However, Montimere was arrested after his real age was discovered when a coach in Florida recognized him as a player who starred at Dillard High School in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., in 2007.
Montimere posted a $500 bond and could be sentenced to six months in jail and fined $2,500. Permian High School will likely have to forfeit the 2009-10 season. –a.r.
