Venus and Serena Poised to Break Clay Curse: Still Alive at French Open

alt

After a wild week of rain delays and late nights for many players, Serena and Venus Williams are still alive at the French Open. Sitting at nos. 1 and 2, respectively, in the rankings, it would seem a given that the sisters would be coasting through their draws, but not so. It seems they’ve been stifled over the years by a clay court curse.

Venus advanced to the fourth round for the first time since 2007, soundly beating Cibulkova 6,3-6,4. She slammed down 6 aces and hit over 20 winners against her opponent.   alt

Serena’s second-round match was scheduled for Thursday, but rain caused a cancellation, pushing the match to this morning. The delay must’ve given the world’s no. 1 player a serious charge, as she romped her opponent, Germany’s Goerges (27), 6,1-6,1. She played a near perfect game with almost no unforced errors.

Both sisters are eager to improve their showings in Paris and, so far, so good. Venus will next compete against either Rezzai, who recently defeated her in Madrid, or Petrova, who beat Serena at the same tourney. Serena’s next opponent is yet to be determined.

There’s a tough dirt road ahead, but if they continue to keep their current form, there could be another all Williams final – but this time on an unlikely surface. Keep pushing, ladies. —gerald radford
