Bill Maher may have really crossed the line of cute commentary to pure racist diatribe on his HBO show, “Real Time with Bill Maher”, when he spoke about the president of the United States.
During one skit, he told the audience that he wants President Obama to act like a “real black president.” In other words, Maher pretty much stated that it was his desire for the president to get gangsta when he met with members of the top brass at BP regarding the worst oil spill in U.S. history.
This is what Maher said, verbatim:
“I thought when we elected a black president, we were going to get a black president. You know, this [oil spill] is where I want a real black president. I want him in a meeting with the BP CEOs, you know, where he lifts up his shirt where you can see the gun in his pants. That’s — ‘we’ve got a motherfu**ing problem here?’ Shoot somebody in the foot.”
So, in Maher’s opinion, acting like a black man or black president means carrying a gun in your waist band, and lifting up your shirt [ala, Ice Cube in Boyz N’ the Hood] to show that a pistol is our way to handle disputes. Wow. In short, a black man or black president is predisposed to handling any crisis with a show of violence.
Did Maher cross the line in your opinion? Or is Maher simply intoxicated from watching too many old-school urban flicks? He obviously knows Boyz N’ the Hood very well. –terry shropshire
