Debt Collectors Forced to Pay $1.5M for Racist Voice Mails

A man who received threatening voice mail messages from debt collectors has just been awarded $1.5 million dollars in punitive damages.  Allen Jones was told he owed $200 on some credit cards for a debt from 2007.

According to WFAA-TV of Dallas-Fort Worth, the messages were described as both “threatening and harassing.” The Debt Collectors were from Advanced Call Center Technologies LLC.  In total they left at least eight messages for Jones in August 2007. Many of the voice mail messages were filled with racist comments and profanity-laced, according to reports.

“This shouldn’t be tolerated,” Jones said. “Nobody should have to experience what I had to experience.”

One message was “This is your mother—-ing wake-up call you little lazy a—b—-,” a collector said on one. “Get your mother—-ing n—– ass up and go pick some mother—-ing cotton fields.”

Mark Frenkel, a member of Jones’ legal team told reporters, “If we did not have tapes, no one would ever believe that this happened.”

A Dallas County jury awarded Jones $50,000 in mental anguish and $1.5 million in punitive damages.  However, there is no information regarding how widespread a practice this was within the company.  torrance stephens, ph.d.
