The Caribbean nation of Aruba is a melting pot of cultures from the Papiamento language of its natives to the mash up of customs and traditions of Africa, the Netherlands, Spain and South America. Arubans are warm, friendly people eager to share knowledge about their beautiful island.
Perfect Weather: Oh yes, it’s very hot, but the Caribbean trade winds keep it comfortable, even in direct sunlight.
Party All the Time: Most resorts and hotels have casinos. The island’s 24-hour casino is located downtown. There are a multitude of shopping, dining and nightclub options downtown and in the high-rise hotel area. Visit the legendary Charlie’s Bar in San Nicolas for superb seafood chowder and ice-cold Balashi (Aruban beer). Be warned: Charlie’s is located in the red-light district.
One Happy Island: Aruba bills itself as “One Happy Island,” and that motto rings true in every encounter. From the friendly cabbies to the ordinary Arubans one meets on the street, opportunities to meet new friends abound.
Leisurely Pace: Lose the watch, the sun’s warm rays will gently nudge you awake in the morning and the surf will lull you to sleep at night. Don’t pack formal attire; in Aruba “formal” means shorts and a T-shirt — with sleeves.
Local Cuisine: Nos Cunucu, which means Our Farm in the Papiamento language, is a restaurant and bar that serves authentic Aruban food, prepared in the traditional way. Notable dishes: Iguana soup, goat stew and a yummy dessert called Dushi Papaya á la Cunucu, which is fresh papaya served over a dollop of vanilla ice cream. –randy fling
