Tamara J’s Working Faithfully

Tamara J's Working Faithfully

The music industry requires a lot of work, but it also requires a lot of faith. No matter how talented or how much work one puts in, success isn’t guaranteed.  Singer-songwriter Tamara J can definitely attest to that. In 2007 she moved from her hometown of Detroit to Atlanta and began to grind it out on the music scene.  Shortly after recording a four-song demo with the Urban RockStarz production team, she began performing and networking to make her presence known. That exposure led to her landing on Killer Mike’s Underground Atlanta compilation album with a song titled “Wait For You.” Tamara J’s work ethic has opened up many doors for her, and she’s working diligently to take them off the hinges. –steve simpson

In today’s ever-evolving music industry, artists and musicians are often required to wear multiple hats.  Which hats do you wear?
First, a woman of good character. Also, I am a singer, songwriter, arranger, and promoter of my art. You can’t be afraid to go to the people.

Who have been your biggest supporters throughout your musical journey?
My biggest supporter is definitely my mom. I can remember her driving me back and forth from rehearsals, being at all my performances and helping to raise [money]. … And my father, who kept me grounded and developed in me the value systems I still use today to stay grounded through this journey.

What environment brings out your best creative ideas?
I like the pressure of writing on the spot. In the studio. Sometimes I write in bed. Creativity can happen at any moment. I even think of hooks while I’m driving. It varies with me.

We all have quirks, tell us one of yours.
I’d say my laugh. I have a funny laugh! [laughs]

Outside of music, what else do you dedicate your time to?
I love playing pool. I’m a beast on that table!

What’s next for you?
Well, I’ll be singing the national anthem at the Atlanta Greek Step Show on Friday, June 18.  I’d like to give a huge shout out to my sorors of Delta Sigma Theta, and the rest of my Divine Nine family.  I’m excited!
