Lil Jon Provides Insight on the Evolution of Crunk

During the late 1990s, Lil Jon & The East Side Boyz took Southern bass music to another level by creating a progeny of the music known as crunk. As the self-proclaimed “King of Crunk,” Lil Jon released several hit singles and eventually became a cultural icon in hip-hop. After a six year hiatus due to conflicts with his former record label TVT, he has finally released Crunk Rock. Lil Jon discusses the new generation of crunk and how he continues to keep the party live. –a.r.

You often say that there is old crunk and new crunk. What do you mean by that?

In the early 2000s, there was Three 6 Mafia, Lil Jon, Bone Crusher, Lil Scrappy, Trillville and Crime Mob. There were a bunch of dudes making crunk music at that time. Now all of the little brothers and sisters are now the new generation of crunk kids. You now have Travis Porter, Wacka Flocka and Roscoe Dash. That’s the new generation of crunk.

How do you feel about what those guys are doing now?

I like what they are doing. Wacka Flocka has a song called ‘Hard in the Paint.’ If you want to get crunk and get your day started, that’s a song that you can play. And when you go back to my song ‘What You Gon Do,’ that will also get you hyped. The styles are kind of different styles, but it’s still all good.

Who are you checking for now?

Right now I’m listening to everything because I DJ. I like the new crunk movement. They have their own movement for the kids. Anytime you can have people following you, it deserves respect because it’s hard to get people to do anything these days.

You talk about being a DJ. How do you maintain your party image?

People don’t understand that this is what I do. I have to be the party guy every day. I can’t go into the club and say I’m not drinking and wilding out. People want to see the wild and crazy guy. So I have to stay in the gym. And even if I can’t go the gym, I will stay in the hotel room and do push-ups. I also take my supplements, protein drinks and I drink a lot of water to stay fit. That helps to keep my energy up.
