When and why did you decide to establish your foundation?
It started about six years ago back in 2004, and from there I just took it one girl at a time, and then it just grew. I’ve always had a passion for working with young girls and women. I’m tired of seeing babies having babies, and young girls not fully maximizing their full potential or having their own identity.
What objectives do you hope to achieve with the Princess Within Foundation?
The primary goal of the launch is to introduce the foundation to the community and try to partner with sponsors and leaders. We’re also preparing a scholarship fund, so we are hoping to raise $10,000 for the participating girls who are preparing to go to college. We have about 10 girls who are getting ready to go to college, so we want to be able to provide the girls with scholarship awards ranging from $500–$1,000.
How will you use your book to empower and encourage young women?
… My book, Unlock the Treasure, Discover the Princess Within is a self-help workbook that has [a] daily devotional for young girls helping them to map out their journey through life. I watched my mother become a victim of a drug addiction, and through that experience I became empowered to assist young girls, [and] to show them the value of their own personal worth, letting them know that their backgrounds don’t dictate their future.
How has your foundation impacted your own life?
Being connected to positive role models and just having influential women in my life has helped me to maximize my potential and become the woman that I need to be.
