August 28 will remain forever one of the most hallowed and sacred days in American history. On that day 47 years ago, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. gave his resounding, “I Have a Dream Speech” on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial.
However, on August 28 of this year, Glenn Beck and his Tea Party confederates are planning to hold a rally at that exact location.
It is more than evident that Beck is intentionally exploiting the day and using the event to throw mud in the face of African Americans. By securing permits for the day, some are upset since they cannot organize an event on the same day at the same location to commemorate the 47th anniversary of the March on Washington.
Beck, in concert with Sarah Palin and many other notable right-wingers have even called the event the “Restoring Honor Rally” and claims that the event will be neither partisan nor political. One the one hand, the Conservative talk show host says he will be commemorating Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s historic March on Washington but also asserts that the aim is to honor members of the armed services and first amendment rights.
The truth is that many of the tea partiers who will meet at the event have never respected Martin King and most likely question the legitimacy of him having a national holiday. Moreover, they have no respect for people who are of ethnicities other than white and show disdain for the current administration because of his name and skin color alone. This is just another blatant attempt to move America backwards and give more visibility to the attention-seeking megalomaniac known as Glenn Beck.
Yes it is true, Mr. Beck has the right to say what he thinks but promoting fascism and hatred should never be tolerated. Beck has openly stated that President Obama hates white folks.
So it is my suggestion that all Americans, not just African Americans, gather at the same location at the same time and place, for it is historic blasphemy for zealots who often espouse racist sentiments to defame that prominent day. –torrance stephens, ph.d.
