Was it just me or was the absence of Jay-Z, Rihanna and Beyonce at the BET Awards extremely conspicuous and curious to you?
It was rumored that last year Jay-Z began plotting against Chris Brown to keep him from appearing on the 2009 BET Awards and participating the first Michael Jackson tribute, just days after MJ’s death — because Brown had just been convicted of beating up his then-girlfriend and Jay-Z artist, Rihanna.
And that’s precisely the reason Jay-Z did not appear at the 2010 BET Awards this past Sunday, reports a few reputable entertainment blogs. Jigga Man is said to have spurned the offer to attend when he learned that executives at BET were going to give Chris Brown the solo spotlight on the Michael Jackson tribute.
Remember last year, host Jamie Foxx, Usher, Beyonce, Ne-Yo and, of course, sister Janet Jackson all participated on some level in the tribute to the King of Pop. Most music fans and MJ disciples believe that Brown delivered the best replication of Michael Jackson’s stage musicianship. To top it off, Brown received a standing O along with the sympathy of many in the auditorium and TV viewing audience after he broke down sobbing during the song “Man in the Mirror”.
It is also rumored that Drake beat out Jay-Z in the category in which they were competing because of Hov’s snubbing of the awards show.
Do you believe Jay boycotted Brown? And did you find it interesting or questionable that all three artists did not attend this year’s awards show, despite being nominated in multiple categories? –terry shropshire
