You could call singer-songwriter Dawn Richards many things: talented, attractive, and you should add to that list, superwoman.
After going multiplatinum with her former girl group, Danity Kane, and then joining Diddy for his new group, Diddy-Dirty Money, she is now releasing her debut comic book series titled, Danity Kane.
For Richards, the comic’s protagonist and story line of using one’s strength to save the world from evil, mirrors her own life struggles.
“This comic is metaphorically my experiences through life. I never had it easy and always had to fight to overcome things. I had a great family foundation who told me I was strong, but some days you feel like you’re not because so many try to tear you down. But I learned my own strength from losing everything in [Hurricane] Katrina, to being in the industry and having a great album and great group and losing it all and rebuilding my career. Plus, when I tried out for the NBA and there were only three black girls with me trying out — somehow we still made it. All those things are obstacles I had to overcome,” she says.
True to her comic character, Richards is also on a mission to encourage people to be themselves and to save the music industry from the evil forces of negativity.
“I want people to be comfortable in their own skin and love who they are and know there are no set standards. That’s why the character comes from a different world and is quiet and mysterious. I’m just fighting to spread a positive message since evil is so real in this industry and everybody wants to gravitate to the negative because it’s easier to believe the bad before the good,” she says.
Armed with her musical talents and new comic book, Richards just might be able to help save the world with her positive energy. –souleo
