Republicans Claim Health Care Reform Same as Slavery

altThey’re at it again. Remember a few years ago Republicans dastardly attempts to co-op the words Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in order repeal affirmative action and obliterate civil rights gains?

Well, in the words of Yogi Berra, it’s déjà vu all over again. It is now part of the GOP strategy to greatly minimize and trivialize something of immense importance. This time, the horrors of slavery are being likened to President Obama’s health care reform.

Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann accused President Obama of “turning our country into a nation of slaves,” this weekend at a conservative summit in Denver, Politico reports.

Bachmann was riffing on a quote from Revolutionary War poet John Jay, who declared that “posterity shall never reproach us with having brought slaves into the world.”

Bachmann cited health care reform as the Democrats’ greatest sin, and said it, along with the Democrats’ other moves, amounted to “tyranny.” She then laid out her dream Republican agenda, anticipating a GOP takeover of the House. “We pare back welfare to the truly needy, for the truly disabled, because yes, we can make that determination,” she said. “Close and secure American borders, cut the budget … then we massively cut spending first, then we cut taxes.” –terry shropshire
