Indiana Black Expo: Gang Member Shoots 9 Kids; Arrested Following Manhunt

altA suspected teenage gang member almost single-handedly destroyed the image of the largest black expo in the nation as well as the city of Indianapolis when he shot nine youths at the city’s Black Expo Summer Celebration.

Seventeen-year-old Shamus Patton was arrested following a 42-hour manhunt at an apartment complex, says the Associated Press. Police Chief Paul Ciesielski said the shooting was caught on videotape and that at least three eyewitnesses identified the gunman. At least one of them named the exact apartment complex where Patton could be found.

Deputy Chief William Benjamin said the teen’s motive for firing shots into the throngs of black people over the weekend appeared to be gang related.

altBenjamin told the press that the teen is being held in jail on preliminary charges of aggravated battery and criminal recklessness. Julio Fernandez, the Marion County Sheriff’s Department spokesman couldn’t say if the suspect had secured an attorney. –terry shropshire
