Darius McCrary Ready for Drama on ‘The Young and The Restless’

altDarius McCrary is perhaps best known for his role as Eddie Winslow on the classic TV sitcom, “Family Matters” and for his high-profile and tumultuous relationship with video vixen-turned-best-selling author, Karrine “Superhead” Steffans.

But that history may soon be overshadowed by his latest role as Malcolm Winters on daytime’s No. 1 soap opera, “The Young and the Restless.”

During a special appearance at the National Association of Black Journalists Arts & Entertainment Task Force Reception, McCrary reflected on the welcoming reception from cast members and fans.

“I couldn’t have asked for a warmer reception from the cast. The cast is extremely talented and unselfish. The fans have been wonderful. I know at first there was some question of what I would bring to the role. I know people love Shemar [Moore] and he is irreplaceable, but I would like to think the same of myself,” he says.

For McCrary, the transition to working on a daytime soap was also eased in large part thanks to a familiar face on-set. Bryton McClure was McCrary’s co-star on “Family Matters.”

“I used to hold Bryton in my arms as a little boy and he has taught me a lot of the ropes. It shows you that you want to be the best example possible ’cause you never know when that example will come back to bless you later on,” he says.

McCrary is also delighted with his co-star, Julia Pace Mitchell, who plays his love interest, Sophia. McCrary finds Mitchell’s curvy figure and dark skin a welcome change to the typical look of a soap opera actress.

“I hope that it sends a message that the world is getting real. She is the real deal as a woman and actress. I think it’s time that we set the bar there so that people can see someone they can relate to,” he says.

One thing that McCrary can’t quite relate to is his character. While he did reveal that we can expect Malcolm to become a bit more settled this year; McCrary is quick to note not to expect the same from him since he is busy with various projects, including an upcoming rock-soul fusion album.

“Being a father has changed my perspective on life since it’s not just about me anymore but I don’t know if I will ever be settled in my personal life because I’m always working on a film, music and writing,” he says.

Let’s just hope that Malcolm doesn’t become too settled this season since we all want McCrary to bring the drama. –souleo
