Rapper SL Jones had been flying under the music radar for years, but after joining forces with Grind Times’ own Killer Mike in 2008, his career skyrocketed.
Hailing from a city notorious for gang violence, this Little Rock, Ark., native is determined to use his lyrical rhymes to send the message that his city has more to offer than just senseless violence.
To celebrate the upcoming release of his mixtape Why SL Jones, and the launch of his independent label M.A.D.E Entertainment, Jones has released a series of song leaks on the Internet which he calls “No Expiration Date,” giving fans a taste of what’s to come from SL Jones. –christian johnson
How does it feel to have worked alongside rap legends Big Boi, Andre 3000 and Killer Mike?
When I was there it was like rap college. It felt like an internship most of the time because I wasn’t rapping all the time. I got to see so much and got to absorb so much. I’ve traveled the country twice and it had nothing to do with my career, because Killer Mike brought me onto the team. I got to learn a lot from peoples good and bad decisions.
Where did the idea for the “No Expiration Date” series come from?
I did over 50 songs for just the mixtape, so I had to figure out a way that I could continue to release music, but at the same time continue to improve on my quality of work, which is how I came up with the “No Expiration Date” series.
When is the mixtape dropping and what can fans expect?
What I want is for the people to decide when the mixtape will drop. It all depends on how they respond to the different song leaks. Some of the people featured are Killa Mike, Pill, Wacka Flocka and Trey Songz. With this album I want to try to preserve the relevance of the rap game.
