Be it music or fiction, it’s not easy being known as the “new jack” in any industry. Establishing yourself takes a lot of time, energy, and of course, patience. National bestselling author of Hood Rat and Section 8 and writer Kwan’s protégé, Terry Wroten is willing to grind for his respect and that’s exactly what he’s doing with his latest book, Natural Born Killaz. –dana rettig
What inspired you to write Natural Born Killaz?
My life experiences — I wanted to expose the ugly side of kids getting caught up in gangs. I didn’t want kids to get caught up like I did. I was incarcerated from age 14 to 24.
How do you cope with success?
I’m humble. I still have work to do, but I know I’m blessed.
Who inspired you to become an author?
In prison, I learned how to read and write and was fascinated with the art. The first book I read was Gangsta and it inspired me to write my book because it was talking about gangs and at that time I was a Crip member.
How does it feel to know that people see you as an inspiration?
I’m relieved. I [did] so many wrong things growing up. I know that if I can just reach one person with my story, I’ve done something good.
How does it feel to be known as the “new jack” in the street fiction world?
It’s a blessing, because there aren’t too many writers that are making noise in the industry.
What’s the difference between maintaining passion for your art and doing what you love for cash?
The difference is that when you have passion for what you’re doing, it comes from the heart by crafting your work into perfection vs. doing it for money.
What advice do you have for new authors?
Research your past and present authors. Study the business. Know your writing style and never give up!
