It wasn’t until friends and family encountered Gloss’ alter ego, that they realized she has pure, raw talent. When she’s on the mic, she goes hard on the tracks, sans profanity, and keeps it classy. A triple threat, Gloss dances, sings and raps. The fashion-forward 20-year-old recently released a mixtape, Gloss World: The Introduction, which features hip-hop’s A-list. It includes Waka Flocka, Bobby V, OJ Da Juiceman, Trina, Rasheeda, Tamika Scott and Princess of Crime Mob. –brandi hart
Who is Gloss?
I call my music urban suburban because of my diverse upbringing. I’m from Atlanta but I was born in New York, where both my parents were raised. All of my life, I’ve traveled back and forth. When I was in school, I was a good student … alert. I made good grades. I have this no-nonsense edge that screams New York. I like to have fun and get fly. My music is a big celebration of life.
How did you get your nickname?
Ever since I was a little girl, I have been a huge fan of lip gloss. My parents and friends actually gave me the name Gloss. I couldn’t go without it. [When I am wearing it], I feel like I shine. I have this [saying] ‘my glossy girls,’ who are basically girls who like to look fly and stand out for all the right purposes.
How do you describe your fashion sense?
My style is high fashion. I love Chanel, Christian Louboutin and Alexander McQueen. I also like to incorporate inexpensive brands like H&M and Forever 21 and mix them with pieces from LAMB and Alex and Olivia. I like the variety of it all. I’m really expressive when it comes to my style. I’m always changing my hairstyles and nails. Just like my music, my style keeps evolving.
