It was only a matter of time before two of the music industry’s brightest stars teamed up for a creative visual collaboration. That was exactly the case when R&B heartthrob Trey Songz brought Nicki Minaj along for the ride in his latest video “Bottoms Up.”
In a surprising twist, Songz cast aside the traditional bottle-popping visuals — now synonymous with club anthems — to seek higher creative platitudes in this new effort. The results are refreshing. Even Songz himself was pleased by the decision to try something new.
” ‘Bottoms Up,’ I feel, is a very creative video. [It’s] different from the norm, different than what I feel is expected of me and anything I’ve shot for that matter,” he said. “[Director] Anthony [Mandler] used a lot of different shooting techniques and I think it heightens whatever it is that the song has already. The drive, the vigor, the club anthem, the energy in the record is definitely heightened with this video.”
The song “Bottoms Up,” which is the lead single on his upcoming album, Passion, Pleasure & Pain, places Songz in a prime position to continue his upward ascent into the superstar stratosphere. But his fame aside, Songz was very effusive in his praise of his co-star (Minaj), whose high energy, and rapid-fire verses are now becoming the norm. “Nicki Minaj does an excellent job,” he shares. “She comes in and does exactly what I got her on the record for. She comes in and she kills it. I wanted her to make the record different. I wanted her to take it to a different place and that’s exactly what she did. Even in the video, she made a major contribution … from her hair to her outfits to the way she raps and how theatrical she is in her delivery.”
