Martin Luther King’s Niece Says Same-Sex Marriage Leads to ‘Extinction’ and ‘Genocide’

Dr. Alveda King, the niece of Martin Luther King Jr., told a crowd at the Organization of Marriage rally in Atlanta that same-sex marriages will lead to “extinction” and “genocide.”

The former Georgia state representative and author has long been known for her impassioned and uncompromising stances on conservative issues she believes in, including being an anti-abortion activist and a vehement opponent of homosexual unions.

She is not the lone member in her family to harbor such beliefs. Rev. Bernice King, the youngest offspring of MLK, marched alongside Bishop Eddie Long several years ago in a staunch show of opposition to homosexual unions.

Alveda King is the daughter of slain civil rights activist A.D. King, Dr. King’s brother. She spoke forcefully about her family’s commitment to traditional matrimonial values and even claimed that her uncle, Dr. King, and his “lovely wife,” Coretta Scott King believed in traditional marriages.

This stance, however, may have put them at odds with Coretta King. Mrs. King publicly supported gay marriages and was a speaker at the Gay Pride Festival in Atlanta in 1996.

“Gay and lesbian people have families, and their families should have legal protection, whether by marriage or civil union,” the late Coretta Scott King said. “A constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriages is a form of gay bashing, and it would do nothing at all to protect traditional marriages.” –terry shropshire
