Now we know where Chris Brown got his horrid Twitter ethics. Or is it the other way around?
Chris Brown’s mother, Joyce Hawkins, ignited a raging Twitter inferno when she dared suggest that “Michael Jackson died so that Chris Brown could live!!!” The comment about the June 2009 death of Jackson has since been since takend down, but not before it generated a funnel cloud of controversy for Breezy’s mom.
The timing could not have been worse, given Brown’s unadulterated love for the late King of Pop. It was on display at the BET Awards earlier this year when Brown broke down while performing during a tribute to Jackson. Thank goodness MTV Video Music Award host Chelsea Handler did not take advantage of that faux pas and blast her into submission. But then again, Handler, who is white, is unashamedly in love with black male hip-hop and R&B stars.
After emerging from this social fire a little charred, Hawkins released a statement to USA Today in which she tried to mop up as best she could. “I’m so sorry that the tweet I sent yesterday was misunderstood. What I meant to say is that Chris has always been inspired by Michael Jackson’s music and his career.”
Hawkins offered inspiration to her 8,000 followers a few days later, tweeting that “Angels continue to lift ur heads ever so high and ask God to guide and lead u throughout the good and the bad. Stand strong on his [sic] word!!!” –terry shropshire
