On Sept. 11, 2010, BMI hosted its 10th annual Urban Awards in Los Angeles. At this awards show, the songwriters, producers and music publishers of the most popular R&B, rap and hip-hop songs are honored. Rolling out caught up with several artists on the red carpet to get their take on the music industry and the current state of hip-hop.
Super producer will.i.am received the BMI President’s Award for his impact on the entertainment industry worldwide. A musical phenomenon and a huge international star, will.i.am is responsible for megahits like Usher’s “OMG” and Black Eyed Peas, “Boom Boom Pow.” He is by far the most sought after commercial producer in the industry and is steadfastly becoming the new “Godfather of Sound.”
New hip-hop sensation B.o.B, best known for his smash hit, “Beautiful Girls” was one of the night’s performers. He is quickly taking over the music scene with his witty punch lines, relatable lyrics and catchy melodies. With the success of his newest singles, “Airplanes” and “Magic,” he is poised to become one of music’s next big stars.
Another one of the night’s performers, Pleasure P, known for his popular cheaters anthem, “Boyfriend Number Two” and sexy boy band, Pretty Ricky wowed the audience with his sensual lyrics and sexy backup dancers. He is currently in the studio working on his newest album and we look forward to seeing what hits he pulls out of his musical rolodex next.
Anthony Hamilton, one of R&B’s most prized soul singers was also one of the night’s honorees. Famous for classic songs like, “Charlene” and “Comin’ from Where I’m From,” as well as his cameo in American Gangster, starring Denzel Washington, Anthony is definitely an artist to watch.
