Bobby Cox is a well-known entity in Atlanta and major league baseball. The bombastic manager of the Atlanta Braves bid the game adieu after a playoff game loss (3-2) to the San Francisco Giants.
Cox racked up 2,504 regular season wins, 15 division titles (14 consecutively with the Braves) and one World Series championship during his career.
The 69-year-old ended his tenure during Game 4 of the playoff series on the Giants’ home turf with fans — and even the opposing team’s players — chanting Bob-by, Bob-by, Bob-by! Cox emerged from the dugout and simply tipped his hat.
Known as a hard-nosed personality with a fiery temper, Cox shared a teary goodbye with the players in the Atlanta locker room. The players seemed genuinely touched by his words and eventually there wasn’t a dry eye in the house.
At a celebration in Cox’s honor at Atlanta’s Turner Field, former Braves players Tom Glavine, John Sholtz, Fred McGriff, and even home run king Hank Aaron came out to honor the incredible baseball manager.
One fan summed it up for all:
“The whole season has been a wonderful ride, from rookie Jason Heyward’s opening day home run until this final Game 4 playoff series. It’s been a beautiful, sentimental, journey with the best manager that we will ever see.” –christa jackson
