A new type of urban documentary has hits theaters in select cities, much to the delight of avid moviegoers looking for something different. GhettoPhysics: Will the Real Pimps and Ho’s Stand Up, a compelling film directed by E. Raymond Brown and Will Arntz, is sparking a serious conversation about how power is the same — from the inner-city streets to Wall Street. Director E. Raymond Brown sat down with rolling out to give us the inside scoop on the powerful project:
Why did you choose a physics classroom as the setting for the film? How did you blend class and comedy to make this film?
We were looking for fresh devices. We didn’t want just a ‘talking heads’ documentary because we knew that wouldn’t interest a lot of people. We used humor, we interviewed cats off the street, real pimps, and then your Ice-Ts, and your Cornel Wests to illustrate some of the concepts that we’re [using to draw] people’s attention. We kept the satire and fun to balance the opinions, and we kept it raw so people will like what they’re seeing, but also take a message away.
You were dialoguing in the film with college students, but it seems the message is intended for all. Who is the target audience for the film?
It’s not as easy for us to target our market, say as it is for horror filmmakers to target horror fans. Our target is our culture. You can see we pulled a lot of people for this documentary, because they’re all a part of our history. Ideally everyone would watch the project, but since it’s called ‘Ghetto Physics,’ we hope to reach the urban community so they can get this understanding.

Give us a synopsis of the film.
This movie is about different people of different backgrounds coming together and getting a better picture of what’s going on in the streets … in America.
