With the divorce rate soaring and countless examples of marriages gone wrong, are celebrity couples choosing to wait longer before getting married?
MTV personality LaLa Vasquez and superstar NBA player, Carmelo Anthony, were together seven years, engaged for three, and had already had a child before they tied the knot. Beyoncé and Jay-Z were together six years before getting married, and Tiny and T.I. were together almost eight years and had three children before finally getting to the altar. Could this be coincidence, or is waiting to marry the key to making your relationship work?
“The euphoria that we feel in the beginning of a relationship, that in love feeling, statistically only lasts about two years … Two years is usually how long it takes for two people to meet and get married. Thus, once the marriage begins, the feeling is gone and now you are finally meeting the person you married, after the fact. That’s why so many couples claim that the other “changed” after they got married …”
When celebrity is added to the mix, the process may take longer because time schedules and careers may get in the way. When asked what took so long Anthony explains:
“I wasn’t making her wait. If anything, I was waiting for her to slow down. She was doing her own thing, handling her business and we were happy. When it was time to take it to the next step we did …”
Although waiting to marry affords couples the luxury of knowing what they will be dealing with for the rest of their lives, it is not a surefire indication that it will definitely work out. Actor-singer Tyrese dated ex-wife Norma Mitchell for seven years before getting married and having a daughter together. It ended bitterly only 10 months later.
Since LaLa, Tiny, and Beyoncé are still newlyweds, we’ll wait to see what happens. –marqueta smith
